Description
“What I dream of is an art of balance, tranquility, without worrying or worrying subject, and which is for the businessman as well as for the artist, a cerebral calming, something like a good armchair, which relieves him of his physical fatigue. “
– Henri MATISSE, note from a painter, 1908.

This portrait, with a somewhat disproportionate look, is strangely reminiscent of the funerary portraits “of Fayoum” – 1st and 3rd century AD – named after a fertile region of Egypt located not far from the Nile delta. Surprisingly real, the faces of the deceased were painted in black, red, ocher and gold, on thin wooden panels or linen cloths slipped over the mummified body, to ensure them an eternal face towards the beyond. …

As a leader of Fauvism, MATISSE inspires the painters of the 20th century, who confront with admiration his glory and his genius. If PICASSO was his friend, he considered him as his rival.
Henri MATISSE influences painting by simplifying it; he frees the color and the spontaneity of his gesture offers figurative art a peaceful beauty.
